A Letter from Jessica Burton, Camp Liberty Iraq: My name is Jessica Burton. I am a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army and the Detachment Commander for 2nd Platoon, 664th Ordnance Company. I am writing in hopes that some recognition could be given to an outstanding Daisy Troop and its leaders. I arrived in Iraq with 74 soldiers in December of '08. As soon as I had the opportunity, I listed my Platoon on a web site called anysoldier.com. The web site is set up to have soldiers "adopted" and receive support from the Americans we protect. I recently received a HUGE package from Daisy Troop 737, co-leaders Beth McGovern and Michele Novelli. It was clear how much hard work the girls of this Daisy troop put into the package we received! They actually took the time to fill every one of our little requests-- right down to the desperate need that our female soldiers had for panties! This is the largest package my platoon has received and it fills me with pride knowing that it came from a Girl Scout troop, considering I myself was a Girl Scout until the 11th grade. I want to express my most heartfelt thanks for all the Girl Scouts and leaders who devote their time to mentoring our young American women. Without the guidance I received from Girl Scouts, I truly do not believe I would be as confident and successful as I am today. Thank you for helping mold me into the woman I am today and thank you for your continued mentorship of the young ladies of America! |

Roxbury Troop 660 from Jefferson Elementary School went on their first camping trip at Jockey Hollow. It was the first camping trip that the entire troop attended! The trip took place November 2008. The third graders and their leaders went on a hike to Washington's Headquarters in the National Historic Park nearby, had a dance party under the pavilion and learned first aid from a nurse! Everyone had a great time at Jockey Hollow! |
