1920s Kitchen Gardeners

1920s Kitchen Gardeners

Come garden with us at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morristown. You’ll learn to plan for a garden and then plant one as kitchen gardeners did in the 1920s to feed their households. Together, we’ll make a garden craft that you can take home, too.

  • This program will help girls earn the Girl Scout Daisy Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden Badge (Step 1) and Girl Scout Junior Gardener Badge (Steps 1-4).

App Design and Prototyping

App Design and Prototyping

Learn about user-centered design, brainstorm apps that solve problems, and create your own paper prototype. Think about a problem that you are passionate about and create a problem statement. You will iterate, develop, test, interview to earn your App Development badge.

Apple Cider Making

Apple Cider Making

Join us to make fresh apple cider using an old-fashioned screw press as you explore the use of simple machines and learn about the history of cider making from colonial times to the present.

  • This program is located at Tenafly Nature Center in Tenafly, NJ.

Archery at Jockey Hollow & Lake Rickabear Camps

Archery

With a little practice and good hand-eye coordination, you’ll be hitting bullseyes in no time. During this two-hour session, you’ll learn all about archery—the equipment, safety, and shooting on an archery range. Choose between our two camps for your preferred location: at Jockey Hollow Camp in Mendham or Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon.

  • Archery sessions are available from mid-April through mid-November.
  • Sessions must be reserved at least 30 days prior to desired date.
    Adults can register to participate, too.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration (May 21)

Celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month with us at Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon and enjoy unique cultural traditions and cuisines. Bring the whole family! Food trucks will be on-site.

Automotive Design

Explore automotive design and the future of transportation and mobility. In this workshop, you’ll get to design a new vehicle as you learn the importance of including market research, safety, and sustainability in your designs. Plus, you’ll learn the Design Thinking Process and learn how to examine mobility across time, conduct automotive market research, determine your vehicle's design criteria, sketch a vehicle to meet your criteria, and sculpt and share your vehicle design to earn your Automotive Design badge.

Becoming Powerful Speakers

Develop your public speaking skills to express your ideas clearly and powerfully in this fun and virtual one-hour group activity led by Powerful Speakers Unlimited. You will learn to develop a stage presence with tips and techniques that will help you speak comfortably with friends and adults and in front of a group.

  • This program helps girls earn the Girl Scout Brownie Making Friends Badge (Steps 4), Girl Scout Junior Social Butterfly Badge (Steps 4), and Girl Scout Cadette Public Speaker Badge (Steps 2 & 3).

Boo Bash Drive-Through Spooktacular

Bring the whole family to Lake Rickabear Camp for this year’s Drive-Through Boo Bash. Enjoy engaging—not too spooky—live Halloween displays created by Girl Scouts, and vote for your favorites. Girl Scouts will receive a fun patch and all children older than age 3 will receive a goody bag.

Bronze Award Workshop

Bronze Award Workshop

When Girl Scout Juniors team up to make a difference in their community, they learn important leadership skills, discover new passions, and watch how seemingly small actions make a big difference. It all adds up to the Girl Scout Bronze Award—the highest honor a Junior can achieve. For those parents and troop leaders who will be mentoring girls seeking to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award, this workshop will help you understand the requirements and steps to achieving it. Attendance is optional, but highly recommended.

Business Visionary

Business Visionary

Earn your Girl Scout Junior Business Jumpstart Badge by brainstorming ideas for new products that could change lives and learning how to turn a good idea into a business. In this workshop, you’ll share your new product ideas with others, get feedback from them, improve your product idea, and create a commercial to sell it.

  • This activity will help girls earn the Girl Scout Junior Business Jumpstart Badge.

Cake Decorating I

Cake Decorating I

Be creative with icing as you learn from a professional baker how to decorate a cake that you can take home. You’ll earn Part 1 of your Girl Scout Bake Arts Patch as you master the basic skills for turning something tasty into something beautiful, too.

  • Fee includes program materials, professional instruction, and part 1 of a Bake Arts Multilevel patch. Take-home materials also include a practice board, pastry bag, information sheet, four decorating tips, and a small spatula (retail value of $22). LINK patch can be purchased at the council shops.
  • Adults can register and participate, too. Chaperones who are not participating do not need to register online or pay. A registered adult must remain for the duration of the program activity.

Cake Decorating II

Build on the decorating skills you learned in Cake Decorating I, as you work with bakery icing to create ruffled swags and basket weaves on a cake you can take home. You will learn to equally divide a cake to create borders using piping techniques.

  • Cake Decorating I is a prerequisite.

Camp Like a G.I.R.L.

Camp Like a G.I.R.L.

Get the chance to be a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, and leader during this overnight camping experience at Jockey Hollow Day Camp in Mendham. You’ll hike the trails, stomp in the stream, set up a tent, and enjoy an evening by the campfire making S'mores. Sleep in the comfort of a cabin that includes thick mattresses, sinks, and flush toilets, and enjoy meals served outdoors in the pavilion.

  • This program activity helps girls earn the Girl Scout Junior Eco Camper Badge and Girl Scout Junior Camper Badge (Steps 1, 2, 4 & 5).
  • Fees include accommodations, night snack, breakfast, lunch, a hiking snack, program supplies, and Eco Camper badge. LINK patch can be purchased at the council shops.
  • Note: This is not a parent/guardian and child program. Troop leaders must adhere to the published adult to girl ratios. Registrations exceeding the adult ratios will not be accepted.

Campfire and Night Hike

Experience the changes that occur in the forest as day turns to night during this short, guided evening hike on the trails of the Tenafly Nature Center. We’ll play games as we listen for animals and test our sensory skills along the way. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy songs, stories, and fun-filled activities while we roast marshmallows around a campfire.

Centerpiece Masterpiece Beginner

Chemistry of Beauty

Chemistry of Beauty

Be a chemist for a day with the help of Bellus Skincare Labs staff. You’ll learn about the chemistry behind natural beauty products and how they affect your skin, health, and hygiene. Professional lab technicians will explain the science behind your skin as you take a closer look under a microscope and determine the best cleansing products for you. You’ll even create your own personal cleansing product to take home by combining your favorite scents and ingredients. This program is being offered for in-person or virtual participation.

  • This program will help girls earn the Girl Scout Junior Product Designer Badge, Girl Scout Ambassador Research & Development Badge, Girl Scout Cadette Science of Happiness Badge (Step 2), and Girl Scout Senior Science of Style Badge (Steps 1, 3 & 5).

Cider Making and Seed Searching

Explore the trails of the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham as we search for fruits and seeds and learn facts about them along the way. After, we’ll make fresh apple cider the old-fashioned way by pressing apples by hand, plus we’ll sample some.

  • This program will help girls earn the Girl Scout Daisy Clover Petal and Girl Scout Junior Flower Badge (Step 3).

Become confident with coding as you learn algorithms and loops and play a game with conditionals. You’ll discover how to create your own set of commands as you develop dances for virtual animals during this coding workshop and share them with friends to earn your Coding Basics Badge. Plus, you'll learn about women in computer careers.

Express yourself through cookie creations! Using fresh-baked sugar cookies, icing and sprinkles, you will learn to decorate one-dozen colorful cookies like a professional baker during this virtual program.

  • This program will help girls earn the Girl Scout Brownies Snacks Badge (Steps 1 & 3), Girl Scout Brownies Senses Badge (Step 4), Girl Scout Junior Simple Meals Badge (Steps 1 & 4), and Girl Scout Cadette New Cuisines Badge (Step 3).

Crack the Case

Be a detective and crack the case with techniques used by forensic scientists in this workshop for Girl Scout Junior and Cadette troops at Liberty Science Center. Learn about fingerprinting, fiber comparison, and analyzing ballistics. Enjoy a show at the largest planetarium in the western hemisphere and visit the general exhibits.

  • This program activity helps girls earn the Girl Scout Junior Detective Badge (Steps 3, 4 & 5).

Discover baking with this beginner virtual lesson in baking and cooking with the staff at Food Explorers. You’ll learn how to make some delicious treats at home from basic ingredients, as well as discover some fun facts about food and nutrition.

Explore the secret garden at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown, NJ, and be inspired to paint the nature you see. You’ll have the opportunity to create a landscape painting after your walk. Then, tour Macculloch Hall to view the portraits and paintings throughout the 19th century rooms.

  • This program activity will help girls earn the Girl Scout Junior Get Moving! Journey (Energize and Investigate Awards). The Take Action Project, the Innovate Award, will need to be completed after the program.

Bring your family for a fun day at Lake Rickabear, a 40-acre, spring-fed lake with a 700-foot sandy beach Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Camp offers fishing, miniature golf, outdoor bowling, volleyball, tennis, basketball, and more. Charcoal grills and picnic tables are available. Identification bands are issued when you check-in. Be a scientist for a day with the help of Bellus Skincare Labs staff in Pompton Plains, NJ. You’ll work with organic flowers to create your own floral scented water mist in a lab. Learn about the anatomy of flowers and the role of flowers in healing and beauty products, such as essential oils. 

  • This program will help girls earn the Girl Scout Junior Flowers Badge.

The Force of the Fourth

The Force of the Fourth brings good and evil on all planets. Be a warrior of the stars (dress up if you would like) and make your own tool to defend the galaxy. What side will you join? Then enjoy relaxing meditation on the beach and a closing campfire with S'mores at Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon.

Grow Your Own Forest

Be a part of the Girl Scout Tree Promise and learn how to identify trees, check a tree’s health, and plant trees from seeds or seedlings at Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown. Discover New Jersey’s Champion, Signature, and Heritage Trees, as you earn your Girl Scout Tree Promise patch.

  • In order to complete and earn the Tree Promise patch you will need to register your tree information online.

Jockey Hollow Day Camp Open House

Jockey Hollow Day Camp Open House

You’re invited to tour the beautiful camp facilities at Jockey Hollow Camp in Mendham. Come meet our staff, ask questions, and make S’mores. With a large "L"-shaped swimming pool, Low-Ropes Challenge Course, and Zip Line, beautiful equestrian center, archery range, playing field, and adventurous hiking trails, the fun is endless at our camp. Walk through our luxurious cabins and activity shelters, see our large troop house and spacious pavilion, and more. Stop by anytime between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and bring a friend or two.

  • New or returning campers and their families are invited to attend.
  • Registration is suggested in case of program cancelation, but not required.

Lake Rickabear Day Camp Open House

Lake Rickabear Day Camp Open House

Take a tour of our Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon. Meet our camp staff and enjoy refreshments as you discover what makes our summer camp program so desirable. Our beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed lake is perfect for pedal boating, row boating, paddle boarding, and swimming, and has a long stretch of sandy beach. You’ll also see our archery range, low-ropes challenge course, mini golf course, zip line, rock wall, equestrian area, gaga ball pit, and hiking trails. Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts are welcome to register for our camps. Bring along a friend or two!

Build self-confidence, team cooperation, and problem-solving skills, both individually and as a troup, when a trained facilitator guides you through low rope elements and group initiative activities. Your team will work through frustrations and gain confidence as they create a solution for each activity. Each challenge activity will be geared to the participants’ age levels during this 2-hour program. Girls in Grade 4 or older can enjoy a zip line experience.

  • Choose between our two camps for your preferred location: at Jockey Hollow Camp in Mendham or Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon.
  • Low Ropes Challenge Course sessions are available from mid-April through mid-November.

Maple Sugaring (Feb. 19)

Experience a unique behind-the-scenes maple sugaring program designed for older Girl Scouts. You’ll work side by side with our maple sugaring staff to tap our maple trees and create a sugar bush at Lake Rickabear Camp. Girl Scouts who have previously attended our Maple Sugaring program are encouraged to attend, but girls new to maple sugaring are also welcome to register.

Bring your favorite “guy” along for a day of outdoor fun at Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon. Explore the trails, enjoy a hotdog cooked on the grill, and play miniature golf, try our outdoor bowling alley, and more! Wear your bathing suit and bring a towel for some water fun in the lake.

Get a peek into the incredible life of the Monarch butterfly through this virtual presentation by the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center. You’ll feel like a real farmer when you help with the morning chores on a local farm at Fosterfields in Morristown, NJ. Chores may include feeding and watering the animals, sweeping the barn, herding the sheep, and helping our farmers take the animals out to the pasture.

Mystery at the Museum

Mystery at the Museum

Spend a memorable overnight at Liberty Science Center with other GSNNJ Girl Scouts. We’ll have the place all to ourselves to explore and solve a mystery. We’ll work on science activities and participate in an adventure designed just for us as we partner with the team from Liberty Science Center. Learn about the world of forensic science, see a movie in the IMAX dome theatre, and sleep among the exhibits. Plus, we’ll experience the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium—the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere!

  • This overnight is a new mystery for 2022.
  • Fee includes hands-on exhibits, live science demonstrations, evening snack, and a light morning breakfast. LINK patch can be purchased at the council shops.
  • Each Girl Scout will receive a patch entitling her to unlimited free admission to LSC with a paying adult through Sept. 1, 2022.

Owl Pellet Exploration

Expand your owl expertise as you learn about the amazing adaptations of New Jersey’s owls in this one-hour virtual workshop by the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center. You’ll hear a presentation from the educators, as well as dissect owl pellets to learn more about their prey. Owl pellets are made of the indigestible parts of what owls eat—bones, fur, claws, and teeth—which they spit up as pellets that can be broken apart and studied.

Be an explorer in search of owls during this guided night hike through the Flat Rock Brook Nature Center forest in Englewood.
