Black History Month 2024

We celebrated Black History Month in 2024 by honoring the important contribution of women of color who have been leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math during our S.T.E.M. in Action Expo held on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024 at the American Dream in East Rutherford. Learn about the amazing women who were highlighted at this event here.

Black History Month 2023

GSNNJ staff and Girl Scout Volunteers participated in our Discover Memphis excursion, Feb. 17-21, 2023, our first ever adults-only getaway to this city filled with history, music, and fabulous food on the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee. We celebrated Black History Month as we explored this important location on the Civil Rights Trail and were moved by all we learned. During our stay, we visited Beale Street, Slave Haven, the National Civil Rights Museum, Stax Records, and Graceland, and enjoyed delicious local cuisine and music.

Meet Jeanette Curtis-Rideau

We are honored that performance poet, author, and instructor Jeannette Curtis-Rideau has provided a learning experience for our Girl Scouts to help them discover the art of African-American Poetry. A former Girl Scout herself, Ms. Curtis-Rideau shares her wisdom and insights in this engaging video that will help girls earn their Black History Month patch by meeting one of the virtual challenge objectives
  • Read a story or poem written by poets like Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, and Amanda Gorman and create your own story or poem.

A contemporary of Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou, Ms. Curtis -Rideau offers girls a unique perspective on their work, as well as performs works of her own.

Movie Night Discussion

Our Girl Scout Juniors-Ambassadors planned ahead and watched the movie Hairspray the Musical in advance of our Movie Night Discussion. Then we gathered together via Zoom on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022, to talk about the social and racial justice issues the movie examines.

Harlem Globetrotters Exhibition Game

As part of our Black History Month celebration, GSNNJ Girl Scouts cheered on the Harlem Globetrotters and watched them show off their amazing basketball skills at Prudential Center in Newark on Feb. 21, 2022. They enjoyed a day with their Girl Scout sisters, families, and friends and attended a "Meet & Greet with the Players" for photos and autographs.  View our Facebook album of photos from the event.
