There are several factors that perpetuate gender gaps in STEM
including gender stereotypes, male-dominated cultures, lack of role
models, and the confidence gap. With S.T.E.M. education as one of the
four pillars of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, Girl Scouts is
working to smash these stereotypes by building interest in S.T.E.M.
subjects and teaching girls the confidence they need to thrive in

70 Girl Scouts in grades 4-5 took part in the annual S.T.E.M.fest Jr., which included hands-on engineering and design including learning about circuits, building bridges, and even DNA. The six-hour event took place at our Jockey Hollow Day Camp in Mendham, N.J. At the end of the event, all girls earned and received a mechanical engineering badge.

We hosted our annual Voter Girl event on September 26, 2021 at Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon, N.J. The event was presented by the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, who helped build the curriculum, facilitated the day’s lessons, and taught Girl Scouts about civic engagement and advocacy as the girls worked to earn Girl Scout civics badges. In addition to the support from the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, the event was also being made possible through the support of Jewish Women’s Foundation of New Jersey .
During Voter Girl 2021, girls met women elected officials and the women who oversee New Jersey’s local voting process, learned about women’s suffrage and the passage of the 19th Amendment, and participated in a real voting experience. Voter Girl was open to Girl Scout Brownies through Girl Scout Ambassadors.
